yahoo! has targeted the broadband market in the latest release of its instant messenger software. with the release of yahoo messenger 5.5, yahoo! has introduced a new feature called super webcam. this feature allows one-to-one videoconferencing for broadband users at speeds of up to 20 frames per second–the standard for the movie industry is 24 frames per second. this is a great improvement over the previous version of yahoo messenger, which only offered videoconferencing at speeds of one frame per second. video resolution has also improved, with a maximum resolution of 320×240, over a previous resolution of 160×120.
one of yahoo's competitors in the instant messenger market, microsoft, included videoconferencing in its messenger service, windows messenger, released with windows xp. videoconferencing will not be offered in aol's instant messenger until it is interoperable with other instant messengers. this is part of the regulation put in place on the company by the fcc when it approved its merger with time warner.

when i signed up for earthlink a couple of years ago it had a deal where i received a free webcam. i eagerly installed the webcam and envisioned all of the friends i would be able to see and talk to over my new broadband connection. since that day i still have not had one videoconference with anyone on the internet, and the webcam still sits patiently on top of my monitor.

one thing that made me hesitant to put much effort into using the webcam was the choppy video you would have to deal with. frame speed was so poor you could perform impressive magic tricks over your webcam and still be the worst magician on the planet because no one could see half of the movements you would make.
there's a chance this new version of yahoo messenger may motivate me to dust off the webcam and give it a try.

| the lokesh problem(10:43pm est thu aug 29 2002) ive been following the dialog regarding the infamous “black screen” that is appearing when people are clicking “start my webcam” with yahoo messenger 5.5. our webcam worked fine on 5.0. we started to receive a message about an improper version so we upgraded to 5.5. ever since than our creative webcam (basic 20-30 buck model) has been unable to work with yahoo messenger. the software that comes with the camera works fine and takes pictures and everything. but live chats with cam is now not happening. we are going to follow caz's advice and try to revert back to 5.0. | black screen / creative webcam(10:16pm est sat sep 07 2002) after reading through i see this seems to be a pretty big damn problem. i dunno who i should be pissed at. creative or yahoo. my creative webcam works fine in webcam controller and in netmeeting, but when i try to load it in yahoo i just get a black screen, i have done everything in the webcam help section on yahoo, i even downloaded the little image capture they say to download to find out the source of your cam, and yeh. the vid capture program worked fine but yahoo 5.5 still giving me a black screen. my cam used to work in 5.0 (although it would stuff up the quality. i'd load it in webcam controller and the only way to get rid of the grain/lines is to put it on 'outdoor' instead of 50hz or 60hz. and that worked fine until i loaded the cam in yahoo 5.0, then it'd go grainy in the window which i assumed was just yahoo compressing the image. but then when i loaded webcam controller the cam picture in there was crappy too. i'd go to preferences and change it back to outdoor and while i still had the preferences screen open it was fine, but as soon as i clicked apply then ok and the preferences screen was gone it'd revert to the liney/grainy picture.) i bought my cam yesterday. so it's not tha it's old. it's really irritating to spend 90bucks (australian) on a cam and not have it work in messenger which is the reason i bought it. if anyone makes any break throughs i'd love to know. i e-mailed yahoo but doub tthey'll reply. – by votewithabullet_au |
| creative webcam usb black screen fixed(11:34pm est sat sep 07 2002) ok, after working my ass off and trying a million things i went to the creative website and downloaded the newest driver. go here click web cameras, then webcam and then webcam (usb), it'll load a new page. select your operating system and it'll put you in a queue to download the new drivers, be patient. eventually you'll have an open slot and you follow the prompts. once it's downloaded just run it and it'll prompt you what to do. i found when i installed the first time (before yahoo problems) i didn't over-write some files coz i supposedly had newer files and then the installation didn't complete and i didn't get the little config screen with the cancel flicker button. this time i installed everything, even if i had newer files and it worked fine. now the picture quality is great, no more grainy/liney pictures in yahoo like i used to have. i hope this works for ya's =d – by votewithabullet_au |

| webcam black screen problem(9:57am est mon sep 23 2002) hi all, good news is that now my webcam is working on ver 5.5 and i think yahoo has sloved the problem. there are couple of things to try out in the webcam help section which yahoo has put up recently and i just saw that this morning. there is a link for black screen pbm which says that ver 5.5.0.1232 (recent version) has been designed to overcome the black screen pbm and that we are supposed to download that which i did bt even then i had the black screen then there is another link which says “my webcam was working before the upgrade” which i followed. it says to put some info in registry keys which i followed after which out of blue my webcam started working. so probably those of you having black screen problem with ver 5.5 on win 98 platform should refer the webcam help section and see if you can get some solution. good luck to all. – by lokesh |

| wow same errors!(9:20am est sat apr 17 2004) i see many issues of the same type. my webcam used to work ok. now after about 8 to 10 minutes it freezes but i can still view the other person just fine. with many people experiencing the same problem i really do wonder if it is usb??!! i'm also on xp pro and was using logitech successfully till a few months ago on yahoo. i haven't experienced any freezes of this type on other software only yahoo hell! which leads me to believe that it is not a usb issue only incompatible yahoo software and updates. i might also add that the freezes happen if someone is viewing even if i'm not viewing theirs. usually the viewer is on dsl such as me. another theory i've wondered about is isp's software like aol. i don't have to install any isp software only my modem plugged in. who knows but it's deffinately an issue that yahoo needs to address to have a successful software! – by lynn |

| supermode button(6:12pm est fri nov 12 2004) i hope this helps someone, i had the same problem but i searched and found this, on the yahoo messenger window, click on the messenger menu, then click on preferences, and then click on the new window on superwebcam, there it says some options on the right, just choose “ask me if i want to start superwebcam mode” and then click ok, that should do it and for those who can't get the superwebcam mode to work even if u r on dsl is because u might be probably behind a firewall, my wireless router has one, u need the port 5100 open for it to work, that's the one that yahoo uses for webcam, u must contact ur isp and ask them where can u change that setting if u dont know how to do it, all other firewalls must let that port open also, i used to have that problem but now i don't have it anymore with those changes. hope it works for u. – by baby angel |

| possible fixes 4 your problems(11:02pm est mon jan 17 2005) hi,i came across this board & started reading some of the posts. i just purchased a logitech quickcam pro 4k about 2 weeks ago. i am using windows xp & had no problems with it using yahoo's latest version. i sent one to my gf in the philippines & helped her set hers up via pcanywhere. her install didnt go quite as smooth as mine but the culprit was that she did not have directx 9 loaded and had dx8. once i installed dx9 & rebooted the system recongnized the camera & she was able to go thru the setup. so for all the peeps having problems with errors and such or black screens i would suggest dl'ing dx9 from microsoft if you dont have it. as far as the video goes i find it very good for the 10,000 miles its bouncing back & forth and her computer is running win98 on a dialup connection that she usually connects at 28.8 to 33.6 max. – by jpjs05 |

| webcam viewing without permission(10:24pm est thu apr 21 2005) people, give it up already, there is absolutly no way of viewing yahoo cams without permission, unless you have infected the broadcasters machine with a webcam trojan. you can however view invisabily meaning you can view without being seen as a viewer (i have written a program that does exactly that) but it still asks for permission, and there is absolutly no way around that without using trojans, and if there was it would be invasion of privacy, and you would be breaking federal laws, and could be jailed! end of story – by snoopy |
